Well Worth the Wait

a Sonny & Brenda story

Chapter 4

The kiss seemed to go on forever, and they both wanted it to. But finally, Sonny pulled back, leaving Brenda with her eyes closed, and breathless. "Look at me," Sonny told her. She opened her eyes. "No matter what you hear, there's no one else for me but you." Brenda looked at him quizzically, "what do you mean?" "Your sister came to see me today." "That bitch!" Brenda exclaimed. "What did she tell you?" "Pretty much that she wants me, but I told her I wasn't interested." Brenda let out a sigh of relief, "good." "But I told her it was because of your father," he added. "Is that true?" "Brenda, would I be telling you this if it was? It's because of you; you're the only one I want. But I didn't think it was smart to tell her that." Brenda nodded her head, "OK." "She'll find out soon enough," Sonny continued. "Once you turn 18, I want everyone to know." Brenda swooned; "kiss me again Sonny."

Sonny groaned, and against his better judgment leaned over for another kiss. He made this one shorter and sweeter, and when it ended he told Brenda they'd better say goodbye. She reluctantly agreed. "Will I see you soon?" she asked anxiously. "I don't know," Sonny replied; "but I'll stay in touch." "I loved your note," Brenda told him. "Nah, it wasn't much. I'm not good with words." "Yes you are! You're very good with them. Of course, not as good as you are at kissing." Sonny ran his tongue over his lower lip, and replied, "sweetheart, you'd better leave." Brenda giggled, leaned over and kissed him one more time, and then got out of the car. Sonny watched until she drove off, then leaned back in his seat and groaned.

A phone call from Frank Smith's attorney Phil Cusak jarred him from his lustful thoughts. "Frank's been busted. It's bad Sonny. We need to strategize." "I'll be right there," Sonny replied, and started up his car engine. As he drove, he thought about what this could mean. If Frank went to prison, he'd need Sonny to take on more responsibility in Port Charles, and probably in other parts of the territory. It could also mean that someone with a jones for power could try to make a move. They had to be ready, and they had to be careful. And Sonny knew it also meant he had to keep his distance from Brenda…at least until things settled down. There was no way he was going to risk her getting caught in the crossfire.

Brenda was starting to worry. She hadn't heard from Sonny in weeks; no notes, no phone calls. She heard her father on the phone with him a couple of times, so she knew he was alright; but she didn't know why he wasn't contacting her. And it was obvious that there was trouble; trouble that affected her father. She listened from behind the closed door while Harlan spoke on the phone with Sonny in his study. "It's bad isn't it?" "Well what if they tie me to him?" "Are you sure? There's no paper trail?" "You'd better be right." "No, that's not a threat…" "Yes, I know that Sonny." "Yes, I know you're in charge." Brenda hurried back to her room, her mind spinning. She'd been piecing together a picture of who Sonny really was ever since they first met. She knew he carried a gun, and that people seemed be afraid of him. She knew he was involved in some sort of shady business with her father, and she now knew that her father thought Sonny was in charge of something. But what was he in charge of, and what kind of trouble was he in? And how would that affect them finally being together when she turned 18? She kept a calendar in her bedroom, and faithfully marked off the days until her birthday. Four months to go. She felt like her whole life was on hold until that day.

Sonny was tired. He was juggling a lot these days. Visiting Frank Smith in prison, where he was being held without bail awaiting trial; running the Port Charles territory including Frank's various business enterprises with "legitimate" businessmen like Harlan Barrett; and meeting with people in other parts of Frank's empire, trying to reassure them that nothing would change if Frank got sent away. And then there was Brenda. In an effort to shield her from the turmoil, he'd kept his distance, not even calling her. He hoped she still believed that he wanted them to be together. And he hoped that everything would settle down enough that they could be.

A meeting with Phil Cusak soon changed everything. "Here's the deal Sonny; it's the local cops who busted Frank, not the Feds, and the local DA is prosecuting him. Basically, they got him on the bogus real estate deal that he's into with Barrett and the others." "I know all this," Sonny curtly replied, shifting uncomfortably at the mention of Brenda's father. He didn't like the guy because of how he treated Brenda, but also assumed that it wouldn't be good for her if her father got arrested. The lawyer continued, "it's enough to sink him, but not under RICO. If we can get the evidence from the PCPD, he'll walk." "Frank wants me to steal the evidence?" "Yes. Can you do it?" "No," Sonny replied, "but I'll find someone who can."
