Well Worth the Wait

a Sonny & Brenda story

Chapter 5

Brenda's birthday was just one day away, and she could hardly contain her excitement. She wasn't sure exactly what Sonny would do, but she knew she couldn't wait to spend time with him. It had been a long six months since that night she first met him. They had only been alone together once during that time, when he kissed her in his car near the lake. Her mouth still burned from that kiss. She crossed one more day off her calendar, and climbed into bed. When her phone rang, she knew it was him.

"Sonny?"

"Hey baby."

"Is everything alright?"

Sonny was glad that he could answer, "yes." He had taken care of the Frank Smith situation by hiring outside talent to steal all the evidence from the PCPD. Frank was duly impressed, and eternally grateful. He promised Sonny that the entire organization would be his one day. Sonny felt great about that. Finally he would be powerful enough that no one could ever hurt him again; no one could ever beat him down and tell him he was worthless like his stepfather Deke used to do. Maybe he could finally put the past to rest.

"Are you ready for tomorrow?" he asked.

Brenda giggled, "what are we going to do?"

"Be ready by 10 am and pack a bag; I've got plans for us sweetheart."

"I'll be ready Sonny."

"Good, I'm counting on it. Goodnight baby."

"Goodnight Sonny."

The next morning, Saturday, Brenda woke earlier than usual. She hurried into the shower, dressed, packed and then went down to breakfast, leaving her bag in the foyer. Her father and sister were already eating. Julia looked up when she came in, "happy birthday Brenda!" Brenda smiled at her, said "thanks," and then looked at her father. He was entrenched in the business section of the paper. Brenda shook her head, and then took her seat. "Any special plans today?" Julia asked. "Yes," Brenda replied, but didn't elaborate. They ate the rest of the meal in silence, until grandfather clock in the living room struck ten o'clock. Brenda jumped up and ran back upstairs to go brush her teeth and check her makeup. Julia wondered what she was so skittish about. Then she heard a knock on the front door. The maid went to answer it, and returned announcing, "Sonny Corinthos for Ms. Barrett." Julia blushed and stood up to greet him, and Harlan put down his paper. "Sonny!" she exclaimed with a smile as he entered. "Good morning Julia; Harlan." Harlan walked over to him, "is everything alright Sonny?" "Everything's fine Harlan. I'm just here to pick up your daughter." Harlan looked at Julia with surprised. Julia was surprised herself. "Oh, well, I wasn't exactly expecting you, but give me a few minutes and I'll…" "Sonny." Sonny turned at the sound of Brenda's voice. He beamed at her, flashing his dimples. "Happy Birthday baby." Harlan and Julia watched with their jaws hanging open as Brenda opened up her arms and Sonny walked into her embrace.

Sonny kissed Brenda tenderly, then pulled back and asked, "are you ready to go?" "More than ready," Brenda replied with a smile. "Wait a minute!" Julia exclaimed. "You're here for her?" Sonny turned and looked at her, "that's right." "But…but you told me we couldn't go out because you were in business with daddy!" "I lied." He then looked at Harlan, "sorry to spring this on you." Harlan shrugged, "do whatever you want." Sonny became enraged, "you don't care what happens to her do you? What kind of a man are you?" Harlan was taken aback, and replied, "well, she's 18 now; she can make her own decisions." Sonny shook his head, "unbelievable." Brenda felt like crying, but held it together. Sonny gave Harlan a piece of his mind. "You've got a jewel right in front of you, but you can't see it. Brenda's better than gold, and she deserves a hell of a lot better than you for a father. Let me tell you something…" he stepped closer to Harlan, pointing his finger at him. "You treat her with respect from now on…or you'll answer to me. And we both know you don't want to do that." He turned back to Brenda, "let's go."

Once in his car, Brenda broke down. Sonny took her into his arms, "shhhh, it's ok. I know it feels awful; believe me I do." Brenda sobbed, "you do?" "Yeah, better than anyone." Brenda pulled back and looked into his eyes, "can you tell me about it?" Sonny shook his head, "not today. Today is your day and I don't want to spoil it with that stuff. Now, let's dry those tears and go have some fun." Brenda smiled as he wiped her tears with his fingers. "Sounds good to me. Where are we going?" Sonny settled into the driver's seat and started the engine. "We are going to New York City my dear."

A short plane ride later, and they were at JFK airport, where a stretch limo awaited them. "Sonny! This is so cool!" Sonny laughed, "it's not like you've never been in a limo before Brenda." She looked at him through her eyelashes, "I've never been in a limo before with a gorgeous, sexy man." "Well, there's that," Sonny replied. "So, how does a day of shopping sound to you?" "You want to go shopping?" Brenda asked incredulously. "Oh yeah, I can't wait to have you model everything for me," Sonny answered with a grin. "And of course, I'll buy you whatever you want." Brenda sighed and snuggled against him in the back of the limo. "I have what I want right here."
